Bowing to the massive public campaign for protection of net neutrality US Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler said the FCC will adopt rules banning Internet providers from blocking or slowing web sites, or from charging content providers for faster delivery of their content over the Internet.

The announcement comes after the statement by US President Obama calling on FCC to return to treating Internet providers like common carriers.

The new regulations will enforce the traditional common-carrier notion of net neutrality: that Internet provider should not exploit the traffic of users as an opportunity to bill sites, services, or apps at the other end of the connection.

The vote on the new net-neutrality rules is expected by the end of February. However, the outcome would not be a surprise as the majority of FCC commissioners have already expressed their backing to new regulations.
